Springfield Civic Center is a new facility incorporating the Township offices, library, recreation department, and community multipurpose areas. The library is a major component, including computer, study room, children’s story and craft areas — all with grand views to the natural setting surrounding the facility. Open high ceilings with natural pine timber trusses convey a contemporary lodge feeling to the library. Michigan fieldstone and brick were used in the building exterior in a style reminiscent of the historic legacy of the township.
Also demonstrated in this project are design principles of sustainable site design, including conscious decisions to contain the impact of the facility on its site along with the use of natural stormwater filtration and release methods.
The building layout is planned with an open and welcoming feel, with the space organized into separate functions to accommodate different users and timing. The layout also provides security and efficiency of building services at an economical cost of operation
