YAMASAKI served as planners, urban designers and architects for Barwa’s mixed-use development in New Cairo; a new extension to Egypt’s capital, Cairo. Developed on nearly 2,000 acres of gently rolling landscape, New Cairo City will be home to a self-contained community with a built up area of over 6 million square meters of space in a combination of housing for all lifestyles, commercial, regional as well neighborhood retail, hospitality and convention, healthcare and educational facilities all woven into a system of pedestrian-oriented paths, parks and golf courses. The project also involved on-site central plant facilities and distribution for all infrastructure systems (roads, power generation and distribution, domestic water, water treatment refuse management) making it an integrated, self contained and sustainable community.
